Google Adds Chat to Translator Kit
Share |

Google announced today that it has released chat in the Google Translator Toolkit.

"Collaboration is an important part of translation," says Kartik Singh, Software Engineer for the Translator Toolkit. "Whether you work with editors to translate documents, customers to clarify terms or project managers to meet deadlines, working with other translators is key to making high-quality translations."

Chat - Translator Toolkit

"Just like chat in Gmail, you can send instant messages to colleagues, friends, family and groups directly from within Translator Toolkit," explains Singh. "All the features and settings of chat are the same as what you're used to, including going on the record to save your translation chats in Gmail. If you don’t want to be interrupted as you work on a translation, you can simply go invisible or turn off chat through the Translator Toolkit settings."

Google has also made some other updates to the toolkit. Users can now change their display language and set the toolkit tabs to open or close by default. In addition, Google has expanded entries in the dictionary tab to include useful information, such as parts of speech and alternate definitions.

If you're translating a word in a certain language, you will find alternate translations for that word for different definitions.

Best Buy To Offer Online Video Rentals & Purchases
Share |

Best Buy is getting into the Internet video rental and sales game, joining the likes of Netflix, YouTube and, at some point in the near future, Hulu.

The company will also be competing against other traditionally offline retailers, such as Walmart and Blockbuster. The move, it said Tuesday, will come by the end of the month and will involve selling and renting newly-released movies over high speed Internet connections.

According to the company's press release, the service will be available through a number of select connected Blu-ray Disc players and HDTVs, as well as on PCs by way of CinemaNow. Best Buy purchased CinemaNow from Sonic Solutions, the company that will provide the technology for piping video to buyers.

Immediate availability of new releases is a primary feature of Best Buy's new Internet video service. Rentals will be available for around $4 with title purchases varying from $10 to $20. The one hesitation we have with this is, why should a DVD purchase, minus the physical DVD, cost the same?

Puppet Labs, Adobe Release Open Source Puppet Code for Managing Hadoop
Share |

puppetlabs.jpgPuppet Labs, the commercial sponsor of the open source server configuration framework Puppet, announced today that Adobe has agreed to publish their Puppet modules for managing Hadoop. The code will be freely available for download via the Puppet Forge.

Puppet is an open source data center automation and configuration management framework that provides system administrators with a platform that allows for consistent and flexible systems management.

Puppet takes care of the "heavy lifting" with managing Hadoop, says Christian Ivascu, a computer scientist at Adobe. Rather than manual configuration, Puppet "figures out what nodes need to be upgraded, pushes the new archives, changes configuration files and restarts services."

"We're pleased with Adobe's commitment to the project and that they see the value of sharing their work with the rest of the Puppet community," says Luke Kanies, founder and CEO of Puppet Labs and the creator of Puppet. As Kanies notes, the open source project means that companies can "share the solution with other companies," saving development costs and sharing developer expertise.

Puppet is in use in multiple organizations and industries, including the New York Stock Exchange, Bank of America, and Google. Founded in 2008, Puppet Labs is based in Portland, Oregon.
